Practical Tips for When International Issues Arise in a Domestic Estate Planning Practice
BRIAN TSU AND NANCY HENDERSON
Sponsored by The Catholic Foundation
In an increasing global society, it is nearly impossible to avoid international issues in a domestic estate planning practice. It is impractical, however, for most domestic planners to learn all of the complex laws that affect planning for clients with international ties. But it is possible to know enough about international estate planning to spot issues, address those that are within your sphere of planning and to identify and coordinate with the appropriate resources for truly international matters. In this program, Brian P. Tsu, who speaks nationally in international estate and tax planning, teams up with his partner, Nancy G. Henderson, a nationally recognized speaker and writer on complex domestic estate planning issues. The panel will also provide a checklist to use for client intake purposes to be sure you don’t overlook a foreign planning issue. Ms. Henderson will ask Mr. Tsu, from a domestic planner’s point of view, many questions that domestic planners want to know about international planning. Nancy G. Henderson is a Founding Partner of Henderson, Caverly, Pum & Charney LLP, with offices in San Diego, Rancho Santa Fe and Los Angeles, California. Ms. Henderson has served for 15 years as a Managing Partner of the firm and as Chair of the Estate Planning Group. Ms. Henderson has spoken and written extensively on estate, gift and income tax planning, and has presented outlines on numerous estate, taxation and charitable planning subjects through various organizations. Ms. Henderson obtained her law degree from the Boalt Hall School of Law at the University of California at Berkeley She obtained her bachelor’s degree, magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, from Duke University. Brian P. Tsu is a partner in the Estate Planning, International Private Client and Taxation Groups at Henderson, Caverly, Pum & Charney LLP. Mr. Tsu advises high net worth clients in international and domestic estate and charitable planning, with a particular focus on international and domestic business succession planning, related business entity taxation and fiduciary taxation. Mr. Tsu also advises clients in the context of complex estate and trust administration, particularly where international issues are present. Mr. Tsu received his LL.M. in Taxation from Northwestern University School of Law, received his J.D. from the University of Dayton School of Law, received his M.S. in Professional Accounting from Seton Hall University and his B.S. in Accounting from Boston College.
