TRANSFERRING FAMILY WEALTH IN TACT TO FUTURE GENERATIONS

DOUG BOX and CLINT HAGGARD

Sponsored by Tolleson Wealth Management

Attendees will gain knowledge about the importance of planning to families seeking to transfer their businesses, wealth, and legacies to the next generation.  The attendees will also learn about the role that communication and family education play in navigating the transition, and about the resources available to help families making this transition.  The panel will discuss the lessons they learned from their own experiences as members of families that successfully (and unsuccessfully) passed their businesses and legacies to the next generation. Clint Haggard, President of Burgher Haggard, comes from two 1850s legacy Texas families in Plano that both continue to control assets at a cousin’s level.  He worked for the family enterprise from 1993 – 2004 working his way up to CFO.  Since then, he has helped build Burgher-Haggard, a boutique professional service firm in Fort Worth that provides financial administration, reporting and consulting to families and closely held partnerships.  Currently Burgher Haggard has over 30 employees and over $3 billion in assets under administration. Clint has a BBA in accounting and finance from Tarleton State University, and an MBA from Texas Christian University.  Clint’s passion is helping other families through the journey of generational transition and control.  Doug Box is a Certified Family Business Advisor, author and public speaker based in Dallas, Texas.  He is a frequent presenter at family business forums across the country as well as a guest lecturer at several universities on the topic of family business. In 2005 he formed Box Family Advisors and began helping private families with succession planning, corporate governance, dispute resolution and family meetings. In September of 2014 year he published his first book, Cutter Frisco, Growing up on the Original Southfork Ranch.   In October of last year, he published a second book, Texas Patriarch – A Legacy Lost.  Doug brings personal experience to his understanding of family dynamics.  As the youngest of four sons, he grew up and worked in a family enterprise all of his life.  The Box Family controlled a number of public and private companies with interests in oil & gas, cement manufacturing and real estate.  Following his father’s sudden death and a litigious four-year family ordeal, Doug led the sale of the oil and gas concern known as Box Energy Corp.  Doug attended college at the University of Texas at Austin.  He received an MBA with honors at Baylor University and a Masters in Dispute Resolution from SMU.  He also holds the Certificate in Family Business Advising from the Family Firm Institute.
