THE IMPORTANCE OF GIFT SUBSTANTIATION
JONATHAN TIDD
Sponsored by HighGround Advisors and Children’s Medical Foundation
This presentation will focus on gift substantiation requirements. Specifically, those pertaining to gift receipts and Qualified Appraisals. Many charities mishandle gift receipts. In my experience, donors never obtain an appraisal that meets the definition of a Qualified Appraisal. Gift receipts and appraisals are low-hanging fruit for the IRS when it audits an individual who has claimed a deduction for a charitable gift. Without a correct gift receipt or appraisal, a donor stands to have a claimed charitable deduction disallowed on audit. Jonathan G. Tidd is an attorney whose practice is limited to advising charitable organizations on gift planning issues. His clients include a wide range of educational, health care, arts, human rights and social service organizations. His articles on charitable gift planning have appeared in The Journal of Taxation; Estate Planning; and other professional journals. His office is in West Simsbury, Connecticut.
There is continuing ed credit pending for this presentation. The presentation will be posted on the website document library a few days prior to the presentation.
