EFFECTIVE ESTATE PLANNING AND DIVORCE

AUBREY CONNATSER AND STEVE NOVAK

Sponsored by Communities Foundation of Texas and Mercer Advisors

Some of the most effective estate planning techniques give rise to some of the most difficult and complex issues when dividing assets in divorce.  These issues are most efficiently addressed well before divorce has emerged as a possibility.  Resolving questions of control and management – even over assets and entities already removed from the estate – can have cascading effects on taxation, flexibility for future planning, and family dynamics.  These questions and issues arise in the context of trusts, business entities, and foundations, in addition to assets that pass by beneficiary designation, and can be complicated by state marital property laws.  Aubrey Connatser and Steve Novak will share their practical experiences and advice for addressing these difficult issues. Steve Novak serves as a Managing Director at RGT. He has spent the last twenty years advising wealthy individuals and family offices on estate, gift, and income tax planning matters. Most recently, Steve has been deeply involved in wealth education and family governance engagements. Steve received his Juris Doctor degree and Bachelor of General Studies in Political Science from the University of Kansas. He has been involved in numerous professional and charitable organizations, including the Dallas Steve is also a frequent speaker on estate planning and charitable topics. Aubrey M. Connatser handles divorce litigation, complex property settlements, child custody and visitation, asset tracing, paternity determination, pre- and post-marital agreements, divorce decree modifications and collaborative law. After serving as an attorney- ad litem alongside hundreds of other Texas lawyers for children from the FLDS compound in West Texas, Aubrey was called upon to comment on radio, television and was the subject of a cover story in the Rising Stars Edition of Texas Super Lawyers Magazine about the largest pro bono representation in Texas family law history. She earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology from The University of Texas at Austin and her Juris Doctor from UT School of Law.
