The purpose of this seminar is to familiarize tax and investment professionals with the characteristics, requirements, and planning implications of the Roth IRA and “Designated Roth Retirement Account” (or “Roth 401(k)”) in general, and the pros, cons, and pitfalls of Roth “conversions” in particular. Any professional who advises (1) clients who hold assets in IRAs, 401(k) plans or other retirement plans (2) regarding estate planning, retirement planning or investment issues. The course will add valuable knowledge for estate planning attorneys, accountants and financial planners; professionals in the planned giving, investment, and life insurance fields; plan administrators and IRA providers; and bank trust officers and other professional trustees. IMPORTANCE OF SEMINAR: By providing tax-free distributions, plus no required distributions during the participant’s life, Roth IRAs offer significant planning opportunities to individuals willing to pay more tax now in exchange for lower taxes later. Elimination of the “income cap” test for Roth IRA conversions has made Roth retirement plans available to a much broader class of individuals than ever before. The professional advisor’s lack of awareness of the rules governing Roth IRAs can cause financial losses to a client and his or her beneficiaries. Natalie Choate is an attorney with the
