ECONOMIC/TAX POLICY UPDATE
MARY BURKE BAKER
Sponsored by Baylor Health Care System and Kirsch & Associates
RESERVATION DEADLINE: FRIDAY, AUGUST 26 (IN COUNCIL’S OFFICE)

These are interesting times in Washington, DC.  A lagging economy, high unemployment numbers, record deficits and the debate over the debt limit have served to highlight the need to reform the tax code.  Administration proposals, hearings in the tax-writing committees, the deficit commission and ad hoc groups propose many options for reform.  Mary Burke Baker will provide an update on the status of the tax reform debate, discuss tax expenditures and "loopholes" under consideration, and identify risks and opportunities you should be thinking about as discussions about revising the code heat up.   The participant will gain a better understanding of how the economic crisis is shaping the tax reform debate and the politics and policies that will influence which tax issues are likely to be under consideration.  Using this information, the participant will learn how to assess the risks and opportunities that tax reform will pose for his/her clients/company so that an effective strategy can be developed to address those risks and opportunities. Mary Burke Baker is a government affairs advisor in the firm's Washington, D.C. office. She focuses her practice on federal tax matters affecting businesses and individuals, including tax policy, tax administration, and technical tax issues. Prior to joining K&L Gates, Ms. Baker served on the Senate Committee on Finance for 6 years as a Georgetown Government Affairs Fellow/IRS Detailee. In that position, she worked on major tax bills; managed committee hearings; oversaw IRS policies, programs, and initiatives; and worked on tax reform measures. She also served in the Internal Revenue Service for more than 25 years in a variety of technical and management positions.
