STEVE AKERS

PLANNING FOR $10 MILLION AND UNDER ESTATES

Sponsored by Heritae Auctions and The Catholic Foundation

Steve Akers will lead a discussion of practical considerations for estate planning for $10 million and under estates under the “new normal” of the American Taxpayer Relief Act, including portability concerns, planning structures to keep maximum flexibility, planning flexibility to preserve a basis adjustment on the death of a trust settlor or beneficiary, “undoing” prior transfers for clients who no longer will pay estate tax, considerations in the planning of trusts in light of the higher tax brackets applicable to trusts and the 3.8% “Medicare tax,” planning for IRA beneficiary designations, and various non-tax issues including planning for digital assets.  Steve R. Akers, JD, is a Managing Director with Bessemer Trust Company, N.A., in Dallas, Texas, where he is Fiduciary Counsel for the Southwest Region and is in the Legacy Planning Department.  Mr. Akers is a member of the Advisory Committee to the University of Miami Philip E. Heckerling Institute on Estate Planning and is a frequent speaker at that Institute, as well as other estate planning seminars across the country. Mr. Akers received his B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering from Oklahoma State University and his J.D. degree from the University of Texas School of Law.
